Homeopathy in Treatment of Resistant Depression

Efficacy of Individualized Homeopathy in Treatment-Resistant Depression

Abstract

Treatment-resistant major depression (TRD), defined as an insufficient response to at least two antidepressant treatments, is usually treated with antidepressants, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and vagus nerve stimulation or combinations of these. However, the response rate is modest and, on many occasions, insufficient or nonexistent. Here, we describe the case of a 19-year-old woman with a history of TRD, treated for depression since the age of five years. Her symptoms were resistant to fluoxetine, escitalopram, atomoxetine, and psychotherapy. Individualized homeopathic treatment with StaphisagriaNux vomicaArsenicum album, and Lachesis trigonocephalus was started. Posology was carried out in 200CH dynamizations. Treatment was prescribed for four months. This led to an immediate improvement in mood and a sustained and gradual reduction of depressive symptoms and, consequently, a reduction and then cessation of medication with antidepressants and psychotherapy. At follow-up eight months later, the patient is free of depression and medication. This case study reconfirms the usefulness of homeopathy in the treatment of depression. It also suggests that individualized homeopathic treatment may be useful in cases of treatment-resistant depression.

Self Care: Discover Arnica

Have you discovered Arnica?  Arnica is a magical plant, well they all are. Plants are transformers;  to our eyes, they don’t move and yet working with water and sunlight all types of sophisticated elements are produced within plants which help man,  animal, birds and other creatures.

Even a plant growing in a ditch or a plant called a weed is useful, if you know its purpose.  Man has used plants since ancient times for health and well being.

And it is  easy to benefit  using Arnica, if Arnica is indicated.   We are speaking of Arnica potentized as a homeopathic remedy.  A bit of the remedy “picture” is noted below. Arnica is considered to be very useful for healing trauma related injuries.  It is not advisable to ingest the plant itself.
Following are a few indications when homeopathic arnica may prove helpful:

– sore, bruised pain
–  shock after an injury (especially when you deny the need for help that is obvious to everyone around you)
– after a severe accident
– black and blue bruising
– after accident or injury (past or present)
– overwork, over exercise
– feeling fearful after an injury
– trauma from an operation or dental procedure (helps to promote healing)
– after childbirth
– concussion

There is more to the remedy arnica than is listed here.  If you are in an emergency, consider arnica it can be a huge help.  Keep on hand in your first aid kit.

I would recommend 30c,  2-3 pellets only repeat after 15-20 minutes if needed.  Avoid eating or drinking 15 minutes before or after taking the remedy  and avoid  potencies over 200c unless working with a professional.

relaxing tranquil scene with balanced rocks

How to find wellness in a world gone off kilter.  How do you stay connected to yourself,  your source and stay well?  While we may feel stranded or lonely during these times, we can find our way back to optimism.  Finding and holding onto the calm within is key to maintaining wellness.  The ability to remain peaceful is a saving grace.  It helps our brain, our immune system, our heart and the ability to enjoy a restful sleep. Following are a few strategies for helping you to re-connect with your inner peace.

  • Of course, one thing we have all been advised to do is to turn off the news.   It’s true now more than ever.  If the content is negative turn it off.  It has been shown that watching violent news content literally is trauma inducing.  Best avoided.
  • According to research conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill One smart strategy is to avoid scrolling aimlessly on your cell phone.  We already know its depressing, now the research substantiates it.
  • This is a perfect time to find a craft, become a maker…of something, useful.  Here the only criterion is that you enjoy it.  Find something you can lose yourself in and cheekiness aside, makes the world a better place.
  • Learn to meditate.  Research has verified the ancient practice of stilling the mind.  There are apps you can start with, classes and lots of content on line.  Developing a  mindful practice to transcend limited thinking and toxic thoughts is a powerful and healthy way to deflate stress.
  • If you are feeling lonely and blue instead of waiting for contact – create it.  Scroll through your phone book and reconnect with past acquaintances.  If you’re healthy enough find a place where you can volunteer your services.  Teach an online class.  There are Zoom conferences of all kinds going in, sign up for classes and participate.
  • Last but not least exercise.  A gentle walk outdoor is healing and balancing to your wellbeing.
