Rockefeller, the Flexner Report, and the American Medical Association: The Contentious Relationship Between Conventional Medicine and Homeopathy in America

Abstract

This article examines the ideological and institutional forces that led to the marginalization of homeopathy in American medicine, despite its popularity among prominent figures, including John D. Rockefeller. Drawing on five previously unpublished reports written for Rockefeller by his philanthropic and business advisor, Frederick T. Gates, the article reveals how these internal communications criticized homeopathy while shaping Rockefeller philanthropic foundations’ policy. Using early 20th-century archival materials, it places the foundations’ decisions within the broader context of changes in American medical education and regulation. The resulting funding decisions played a critical role in medical education reform and the rise of “scientific medicine.” The article also summarizes several strategies used by the American Medical Association (AMA) to marginalize homeopathy, including the “consultation clause” in its code of ethics, its collaboration in the writing of the Flexner Report, and its early advertising policies – an underexamined but significant factor in the AMA’s consolidation of power and accumulation of financial resources.

We need to help WFM management see that their decision is not only bad for you, it’s bad for the company. And, we know from our sources in the industry that homeopathic product sales are rising and retailers are making good money off these products. I have used and worked with homeopathy and homeopathic medicines (called remedies) for decades.  Within that time I have had my own wonderful experiences and been privileged to see others.

Today, I want to share a friends story.

This friend sustained an injury to their knees and hamstring muscles.  This caused a bit of limping around and aching for several works…until the lightbulb moment.

Homeopathy in Treatment of Resistant Depression

Efficacy of Individualized Homeopathy in Treatment-Resistant Depression

Abstract

Treatment-resistant major depression (TRD), defined as an insufficient response to at least two antidepressant treatments, is usually treated with antidepressants, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and vagus nerve stimulation or combinations of these. However, the response rate is modest and, on many occasions, insufficient or nonexistent. Here, we describe the case of a 19-year-old woman with a history of TRD, treated for depression since the age of five years. Her symptoms were resistant to fluoxetine, escitalopram, atomoxetine, and psychotherapy. Individualized homeopathic treatment with Staphisagria, Nux vomica, Arsenicum album, and Lachesis trigonocephalus was started. Posology was carried out in 200CH dynamizations. Treatment was prescribed for four months. This led to an immediate improvement in mood and a sustained and gradual reduction of depressive symptoms and, consequently, a reduction and then cessation of medication with antidepressants and psychotherapy. At follow-up eight months later, the patient is free of depression and medication. This case study reconfirms the usefulness of homeopathy in the treatment of depression. It also suggests that individualized homeopathic treatment may be useful in cases of treatment-resistant depression.
